An effective instructor should inspire students to think for themselves; to set and maintain high standards, to help them become self-motivated and self-critical learners capable of cultivating their innate curiosity about the world around them that keeps them forever young. Successful mastering of English in a non-English setting as Taiwan means being receptive to instructors’ insights for creating an English micro-environment of one’s own: a snug, inviting, open-ended corner of the mind where one is able read, to think, to speak, to write and to dream in English.
