Advice for Freshmen

I hope these public messages of advice for freshmen English majors at Soochow University will be helpful in at least three ways.

  1. First, I hope that the advice can truly be helpful to freshmen.
  2. Second, I hope this inspires students to write something that is truly meaningful and potentially able to influence some lives. In this way, I hope students feel the power that comes from being real writers.
  3. Third, I hope this inspires readers to think about their own writing. How could you improve on what was written? How could you make it more interesting, more clear, or more meaningful?
These short papers on advice for freshmen have been written by seniors in the Rhetoric and Composition class during the spring of 2007. The following papers were written by freshmen at the end of their first year in the spring of 2009.
