There are many options for what to download, some of them cost money, others are free. I recommend just downloading the free stuff.

Some useful Books

Stephen Harris. Understanding the Bible. This may be the most common text used in American Universities for secular study of the Bible. It contains many short segments in boxes, it comes in color, and it is fairly easy to read. Its focus is on understanding the Bible as a whole, so understanding it as literature is one of many focuses of the book.

The Bible as Literature: An Introduction: Fifth Edition, by John B. Gabel, Charles B. Wheeler, Anthony D. York, and David Citino. This text does not go step by step through the bible. It's 19 chapters focus on such topics as Literary Strategies in the Bible, The Formation of the canon, and Women in the Bible.

The Harper Collins Study Bible. This is possibly the most commonly used Study Bible used for secular study of the Bible coming from an American source. It uses the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).

The Oxford Study Bible. Like the Harper Collins Study Bible but it comes from a British source and uses the Revised English Bible (REB).
