Folk and Fairy-Tale Sites

Poetry

The following links can help you find good poems for your poetry presentations and they are generally good resources for learning more about and enjoying good poems in general.

  • The Children's Poetry Archive . This site has a huge number of poems by a wide variety of poets. Lots of audio files with poets reading their own poems. Also good information about the poets.
  • Story It Poetry site . This site has lots of classic (older) poems for children. It is an wesy to use, uncomplicated site, without audio.
  • Poetry Foundation's Children's Page . This site comes from the Professional organization publishes Poetry magazine. There are lots of links to find poems and read all about poetry, poets, and more.
  • PoetryHunter.com . If you know the names of poets or poems, you can use this site to search for them on the internet.
  • Ken Nesbitt's Poetry playground . This is a large site with many funny poems, mostly written by Ken Nesbitt. It also features a rhyming dictionary, and downloadable poetry you can listen to.
  • Bruce Lansky's "Giggle poetry" website . Large site. Mostly Lansky's poems with illustrations. Links to lessons about writing and performing poems.

Picture Books

Non-fiction

  • Writing for Children . This site contains a short overview about important points to consider when writing non-fiction for children.
  • Orbis Pictus Nonfiction Book Award . Read an overview of this award for the best nonfiction published in the United States each year. It's especially useful to know their four criteria. This award is sponsored by the US organization: NCTE (The National Council of Teachers of English) .
  • A Blog about writing for children , Read a short entry about two writers who write non-fiction for children's magazines.
  • Creative Non-fiction . Read the Wikipedia entry on this exciting new genre. It's not focused on children's literature, but it is nevertheless, a very important movement in children's publishing.

Local Libraries and Bookstores with children's literature in English

I need your help with this. email me the address, phone numbers, and websites of any such places you know about.

  • Silex books. This is an excellent small bookstore entirely devoted to children's literature in English. They are especially good with picture books. Their website is also very informative. They are located on Ching Hua Street near Da An Forest park, south of Hsin Yi Road.
  • MacKids. This store specializes in importing English children's books to supply to local schools. They also have an excellent showroom in northern Taipei: Mingchuan E. Rd , sec. 3, no. 166, 2F.
  • The Small World room at the Da An branch of Taipei City library has a large room devoted to children's literature in English. The library is located at No. 125, Sec. 2, Jian Guo S. Rd, next to Da An Forest park.
  • Page One bookstore seems to have the largest collection of English books, including children's books, especially in their store at Taipei 101. They also have a second, smaller store near Fuxing and Tunhua East Road. It's a pity you can't search for titles on line through their website.
  • Eslite Bookstores. Of course you know these. They are all over Taipei and most stores also have a pretty good selection of Children's books in English. Although nowadays they seem to focus more on children's books in Chinese, they still have one of the best collections in English.
  • Bookman Books. This Bookstore, near Taida, focuses on English literature and supplying books for university classes. It has a very good collection of literature in English including many well-known children's books.
  • Hello Book Club. Order English children's books through the mail and get new ones every month.
