2 9/25 Taiwan’s culture: What does it mean to be Taiwanese? Write five sentences and be prepared to explain them. Role-play discussing local culture with foreigners
3 10/2 Opinion polls: Write at 4-5 questions about one topic to ask to as many classmates as possible. (Use a certain form?) Fill out and report on polls
Create an opinion poll, and poll your classmates
4 10/9 Education: Write five sentences about how life for college students is different from life for high school students. Group discussion.
Discuss difficulties that freshmen frequently face
5 10/16 Describe behavior. Closely observe three similar situations of people interacting. Describe each situation and tell what is similar and different. (Examples: high school boys, young parents with a baby, college-age boyfriend and girlfriend, etc.) Group discussion and demonstrations.
6 10/23 Jobs: Create an ad for a part-time job suitable for college students during the summer holiday. Or a full-time job for a college graduate. It should be in size 20 font on an a4 sheet of paper.  Job fair
Discuss part-time jobs during the first hour and full-time positions in the second hour. 
7 10/30 Being good: Choose one of the following and tell what it takes to be considered “good”: good student, boy, girl, athlete, boss, teacher, friend. Make a poster with a new group
Bring markers and/or pictures.
8 11/6 Fear: Tell a scary story. It can be a true story or something made up. Share stories. Use past tenses. Learn and retell someone else's story.
9 11/13 Midterm conversation:  Plan a 15 minute conversation between 2 or 21 min. conv. between 3 people.
Give me your groups and I’ll determine the order. Only come for your own group’s conversation.
You will begin your conversation as planned. I will interrupt to ask further questions, especially if it sounds like you memorized your conversation.

11 11/27 Self, Part II: Write five sentences about yourself. Three are true and two are “lies”. 
Bring a photo of yourself with someone else.
Group game & discussion
Guess which statements are lies.
Talk about your photo.
12 12/4 Adventure: Write short paragraph to either support or disagree with the following statement.  “In order to be successful in life, you must be a risk-taker.” Debate
Prepare for and carry out several informal debates.
13 12/11 Traveling: If you could travel to one country with one person for one week, where would you go and what would you do? Change seat conversations.
Learn about holiday ideas and choose your favorite
14 12/18 Christmas: Each group prepares a Christmas activity: A game, a song, or a task to complete Each group has 7-10 minutes (no more) for their activity.

17 1/8 Sign up for a 10-minute slot. Come to my office. You will be given two topics from the semester schedule. Then, you choose which of those to talk about. You talk first, and then I will ask follow up questions. You will be evaluated on
  • Content: depth & detail
  • Fluency: ability to keep talking without pauses, pronunciation, intonation
  • Language: Word choice & grammar (accuracy & sophistication)
