When you want to start an essay, do you ever tried some interesting ways to attract readers’ first sight? Unfortunately, I used to start and organize my essay in a very commonplace way that made my essay a cliché and lack attraction. In order to clearer the topic better, I used words that are just like formulas to complete my essay. For example, I got used to do a simple conclusion in the end of the first paragraph like adding the sentence like this: “I would like to explain these three parts as follows.” Moreover, as to the opening of every paragraph, I was limited to use transitional words like firstly, secondly, thirdly, and finally in the beginning. I don’t think it’s an interesting way to attract readers at the first sight; in stead, my essay became boring and tedious.

However, after taking writing course, I was surprised that there are so many interesting and appealing ways I can apply to essay. In class, I got a lot of new ideas from my classmates. Exchanging essays with peer is a very effective and practical way to get fresh new ideas immediately. Therefore, please do not be shy to share essay with others. For example, my classmate said that she had read a story that ended by a little boy’s words saying that “It is really a wonderful and unforgettable camp in my life.” I also read an interesting dialogue in the textbook, “This is a secret. Don’t tell anyone, mother said.” I was so attracted by the mysterious opening that I really want to continue reading it. “Dialogue” is an interesting and magic way to start and end the story that makes event authentic and credible. What’s more, it arouses readers’ curiosity at their first sight and makes them want to continue reading.

There are some ways of starting a story we had discussed in class; for example, quotations, questions, jokes, facts, and dialogue. I was so impressed by the magic of “dialogue”, it’s an easy way to attract readers, arouse their curiosity, and enhance the persuasiveness as well. I think that attracting readers at first sight is very important and writers should try their best to make readers want to continue to read the story. The way of adding conversation in the story also makes it much more credible and vividly, also it can provide a clearer picture of the story for readers to imagine the real situation. Plain and simple conversation can always bring about powerful effect of the story and arouse readers’ emotion. So do not hesitate, try your best and have fun starting an appealing essay.
