Congratulation!! Welcome to join our big family of English Department. I believe enjoying a kaleidoscopic college life is your dream even though you might find that lots of things are beyond your expectations. Do not feel disappointed! Whether failing or succeeding in college depends on you. Preventing you from falling into Hell, I as a sophomore would like to provide you some suggestions.

No more be a slave is what you should understand. You are old enough to be responsible for your timetable and even for yourself. Unlike the senior high school that everything is arranged, you as a college student should arrange things by yourself. Although the professors like lighthouses would guide you, what they do is just offering you a right direction. You still need to do your best to fulfill the rest. All what I can say is that nothing is more important than to be responsible for your academic performance and pay much attention to time arrangement. Because when time elapsed, the only thing remained is remorse.

Face the reality—freedom is restricted. Most of you may think you can do whatever you want upon entering a university. Cruelly, I must tell you that the concept is totally wrong. For example, if you think class attendance is not important, you must wake up. The professors would still check who is absent. And most teachers in Soochow University have a rule about class attendance. If one misses classes more than three times, he or she would flunk in that subject. I am not frightening you. I just want you to know that “whatever the subjects you like or not, you must attend classes” since it represents the responsibility for yourself and respect for the professors.

Do not be a bookworm. Never think study is the only thing you can do. To have a wonderful college life, you have various choices such as joining extracurricular activities or school’s clubs. Whatever your decision is, I would like to remind you that participating in any clubs or activities needs to a long deliberation in that lack of considerations can make you easily drop out. And comparing with outside a ctivities, academic performances should come first. In a word, think more before you do! If you are sure that you can balance studies and social life, just enjoy any activities you like.

In short, I just want you to know more about what you should notice in your college life from time arrangement, class attendance to learning how to balance academic performances and extracurricular activities. As I said before, living in the heaven or falling into the hell depends on your own determination. By taking care what I suggested, I believe that you will be like a happy angel living in heaven full of happy things
