Class Objectives,

The purpose of this class is to help students become comfortable reading intensively and extensively in English without relying on translation.  Students should be able to read in English as a primary means to gain knowledge as well as for personal pleasure. Students should become comfortable expressing personal ideas about how they read and the things they read orally and in writing.

  1. Improve fluency in reading (read rapidly with few pauses with improving comprehension)
  2. Increase skills for reading (understand purposes for reading and use appropriate strategies in particular reading situations).

GOAL: To improve the speed, facility, and depth of your English reading in preparation for the academic reading you will do as an English major.

To meet this goal you must spend considerable time reading in English, essays, short stories, and novels.

  1. learn a variety of effective reading strategies.
  2. learn about reading with a purpose – using different ways for different types of reading
  3. develop the habit of asking and answer questions while reading.
  4. improve your English vocabulary.
  5. interact with the language and ideas from the readings through discussion and writing.
  6. write creatively on topics related to the readings and your life.

  4. Reading Responses. You will write four short papers responding articles you have read.
